President: Dan Absher
As Absher Construction finishes work on the Holly Park redevelopment in South Seattle, more projects are getting underway, making this year another busy one. "Year 2000 is still a good year," says Sean Lewis, marketing manager for Absher. Lewis says he expects to see a slight decline in the market after the growth of 1998 and 1999. "It probably won’t have the expansion those years had... but still a good year." The $60 million Holly Park project has taken years of work. "It has less than a year left on it," Lewis says of the joint-venture with Pacific Components. Another Absher project that just began a few months ago is the expansion and modernization of the Airport Hilton. "It’s a pretty major project," he says of the $35 million job. Absher is also involved in a joint venture with Kitchell Construction of Phoenix to build a new $34 million jail for Pierce County. Construction management is becoming a specialty of Absher, Lewis says. Absher is the general contractor/construction manager of the $20 million Tacoma Dome Station Phase II expansion for Pierce Transit, as well as for the $3 million Washington Corrections Center in Shelton for the state Department of Corrections. Along with the rest of the industry, Absher is faced with the problem of finding good, qualified workers. Lewis says the company is involved in programs to reach students in public and private school to inform them of the job opportunities in construction. "They don’t know exactly what types of careers there are," he says. "You can make a good living in construction, in many ways.
