Local manager: Arne Hall
Business is booming for DPR Construction, and according to local manager Arne Hall, it won’t let up soon. "We’re busy in every market sector," Hall says. DPR’s specialties range from biotech and healthcare facilities to telecommunications. "I haven’t seen it like this. It’s incredible." The Redwood City, Calif., company opened its Seattle office in 1995, and business has increased ever since. Hall says projected revenues for this year are likely to double from 1999, with projects including construction of an oncology center and renovations for Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup. DPR is also the general contractor for a new $40 million, 43,000-square foot facility for Immunex at the company’s Bothell campus. "Our biggest struggle is just getting enough people to meet the work we have," Hall says, adding that they’ve been fortunate in attracting workers and keeping good crews together. "We’ve actually got people who are anxious to come to work for us." Hall says they’ve managed to keep good workers "by attracting the best superintendents in the region." What is the secret for hiring and keeping a good labor force? "The company puts a lot of emphasis on being different than most contractors," Hall says, describing the company’s leadership as "consensus-based management." He says they emphasize "a lot more responsibility," giving workers a chance to move up quickly. "We really kind of break down all the barriers."
