President: Ken Stinson
Coming off a year like 1999, it would be hard for Kiewit Construction to match its recent accomplishments. In 1999, Kiewit worked in joint partnership with Huber, Hunt and Nichols on Safeco Field, and constructed the flashy downtown Seattle Starwood W Hotel, as well as Pacific Science Center’s futuristic Imax Theater. Steve Smith, Kiewit’s Seattle area manager, said working on busy Fourth Avenue downtown made the hotel project a challenge, as well as the fact that the $55 million four-star hotel required a high level of finish. The futuristic Imax required pre-construction value engineering, which he said resulted in a significant cost savings. Kiewit’s current large project locally is expansion of the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, which will add 156,000 square feet, as well as the new 95,000-square-foot Museum of History and Industry. About 30 percent of Kiewit’s Seattle area work is for the public sector, including wastewater treatment plants, schools and libraries. The local office handles occasional bridge and highway work. Smith said he still sees a high demand for class A office space downtown as well as condo and apartment buildings. "I think Seattle is going to continue to develop class A office space in downtown and in downtown Bellevue and with that will come a restoration of existing buildings to bring them up to the same standard as new buildings." With office vacancies as low as they are, Kiewit will explore more opportunities in that area. "There appears to not be a lot of vacant space, so that suggests there’s still a market for it."
