Kirtley-Cole Associates built a 15,000-square-foot sanctuary for Bethany Community Church in Seattle’s Green Lake neighborhood. The $4.9 million project included nursery rooms, a choir room, a lobby and flexible educational space.

The Associated Builders and Contractors of Western Washington handed out 15 awards Wednesday at its 2009 Excellence in Construction Awards banquet in SeaTac.

The Eagle of Excellence, the top award, went to Kirtley-Cole Associates for a new sanctuary at Bethany Community Church in Seattle. That project also won the Specialty category, and Kirtley-Cole took home another category award, for commercial construction. Rafn Co. also won three awards.

“We received a record 38 entries for this year’s judging, reflecting commercial to residential construction, sustainable certified construction and specialty community service projects,” said Grant Larsen, 2008-2009 ABC chair and president of Express Construction Co. “Due to the high quality and large number of entries, including several first-time participants, several new award categories were created in order to appropriately recognize the many projects demonstrating the high standards made possible when contractors and subcontractors are selected on the basis of merit — qualifications, performance and price.”

This year’s judges included Jay Jannette of Mithun, Pat Logan and Max Steele of CollinsWoerman, consulting architect David Glassman, Carl Molesworth of Pacific Builder & Engineer, John E. Schaufelberger of the University of Washington Department of Construction Management, and Benjamin Minnick of the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce.
