Specialty: Comprehensive core environmental services, specialty consulting in environmental management systems
Robert Newman leads a division that uses Web-based software to help companies manage large-scale environmental projects online. Newman said compliance guidelines created by other firms, “a three-ring binder or whatever it may be,” are cumbersome and impractical for operators in the field. The system works like a complex to-do list. Operators are made aware of what readings they need to take and when. Reports can be filed into a Web database. Some companies are required to use such systems, as in cases where they have a history of environmental problems. Others install them because senior managers recognize that their firms could be liable in the future and want to be prepared with accurate data on hand. Oasis is building a system for Teck Cominco’s Red Dog Mine to carry out “tens of thousands of tasks” each year in order to comply with environmental regulations and track accountability, said Newman. Red Dog, one of the world’s biggest zinc mines, produces about 1 million tons of concentrate every year. Kuwait Oil Co. contracted Oasis to design a similar system, this time from scratch. Oasis also does work for Ensco Offshore Co. in the Gulf of Mexico, Singapore and Trinidad.s is deeply satisfying. “Returning old, underused land to productive use, that’s always exciting.” |
