The project is part of a larger redevelopment effort

A 1906 neo-classical rail station, marred by remodeling projects in the 1950s and 1960s, will return to its original grandeur and become a central stop for the commuter rail line, light rail and intercity rail (Amtrak) services.

Led by the Washington State Department of Transportation, the project is estimated to cost $88 million with money coming from federal, state, county and city sources. The RTA will contribute $11 million.

Otak, Inc. and Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates of Los Angeles are currently
at work on the $1.6 million contract to design the renovation.

The project will begin in late 1998 with $20 million - $25 million in improvements to Amtrak customer areas, historic rehabilitation, and seismic retrofitting.

Later phases will include improvements to the station and surrounding streets, sidewalks and transit stops.

A temporary facility will be constructed for use during the rehabilitation of the station.
