Mukilteo Sounder commuter rail

Although earmarked to have a commuter rail station by 1999, a permanent commuter rail station in Mukilteo probably won't be built until 2001 or 2003, the target completion date for the city's proposed multi-modal terminal. The project would link local transit, inter-city buses, carpools, vanpools, ferries, commuter rail.

In addition to a commuter rail platform, the project will include a terminal building, ferry dock with two slips, ferry holding area for vehicles waiting to board the ferry, 10 bus bays with covered passenger platform area, vanpool shuttle boarding area, park and ride lot, overhead pedestrian loading structures for ferry, bus and commuter rail, connections to roads, pathways and bicycle trails.

The design is part of a larger vision for Mukilteo's waterfront area that will include recreation, commercial and residential uses.

The project will be built on a site now occupied by an abandoned Department of Defense tank farm. Work on the permanent station cannot proceed until cleanup has been completed. According to city estimates, the State Department of Ecology will take at least three years to clean up the that sits just north of the existing ferry terminal.
