Q. Why does a “harmless handful of fluff” California ground squirrel go out of its way to taunt dangerous rattlesnakes?
A. Dangerous to whom? According to Rulon Clark of San Diego State University, squirrels may not only stop, stare and sniff but, if the snake is uncoiled, may even kick sand at it, reports Susan Milius in Science News magazine. And in bursts, the squirrels flag their tails left and right “like a windshield wiper.”
