Bertha finished tunneling last spring, more than two years late. With the new underground route for state Route 99 moving ahead, the dream of a post-viaduct waterfront seems more like a reality — even though the aerial highway is not coming down until 2019.
After the rubble is cleared, the biggest element of Seattle's new waterfront will be Alaskan Way — rebuilt as a multimodal street next to the new seawall and promenade.
