Damage prevention

Seismic analysis

The Professional Engineering Practice Liaison Program at the University of Washington is offering a Dec. 3-4 class in Seattle on seismic site response analysis. Topics will include: local soil conditions; wave propagation fundamentals; dynamic soil properties; site response analysis; and site response effects. A seminar on construction equipment electronics will be held Dec. 6-7 in Chicago by the Construction Industry Manufacturers Association. Forklift training

The Associated Builders & Contractors of Western Washington is holding a Dec. 1 class in Bellevue covering the new forklift standards. On Dec. 1, OSHA will set in place new standards for forklifts, requiring anyone who operates them to have training. ABC's course is a "train the trainer" course, where one or two from a company are trained to become instructors for their co-workers. Neil Callahan of Argus Pacific will be the instructor. Class will be held 1-4 p.m. at CITC's facility. Cost is $65 for association members and $130 for non-members. Multi-person discounts apply and members of ABC's Retro Program can attend for free. A Dec. 6-8 road and street maintenance supervisors' school will be held in Tacoma by Washington State University. Structural concrete

The American Concrete Institute is sponsoring a Nov. 30 seminar in Seattle on the significant changes to the ACI 318-99 building code requirement for structural concrete. Other dates and locations it will be held include: Dec. 1 in Portland, Dec. 3 in Las Vegas, Dec. 10 in Los Angeles and Dec. 17 in San Francisco. Wood Truss Council

Roger J. Gibbs, CEO of Lumber Specialties Ltd. of Dyersville, Iowa, has been named president of the Wood Truss Council of America. Gibbs has 22 years of industry experience. His goal as president during 2000 is to increase membership involvement, build relationships and seek sound business solutions for the long-term health of the industry. The council is a nonprofit trade association of metal-plate-connected truss and related component manufacturers.

PCL

The Pacific Northwest District of PCL Construction Services has promoted Darin Chestnut to manager of business development and Craig Warner to manager of special projects. Chestnut was previously manager of special projects. In his new role, Chestnut will direct all business development activities in the Pacific Northwest, including preliminary planning and preconstruction services. He holds bachelors' degrees in architecture and construction management/architectural studies from Washington State University. Warner has been with PCL since 1990, most recently serving as a project manager.
