Dozens of library projects on tap for Seattle, King County

The Maple Valley Library, designed by Johnston Architects, was completed for the King County Library System in 2001. The project has received local and national recognition, including a 2002 national Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects.

As Seattle Public Library puts the finishing touches on the centerpiece of its $196.4 million “Libraries for All” capital program, the King County Library System is gearing up for a big capital program of its own.

With a $67 million capital improvement bond set to expire after 2007, the library system plans go before King County voters on Sept. 14 to seek approval for a $172 million bond.

Under the proposal, all 42 of the county's libraries would be expanded, improved or replaced between 2006 and 2015. The system includes areas outside Seattle, Hunts Point, Yarrow Point, Renton and Enumclaw.

Between 1988 and 2001, King County's current bond funded 13 new libraries and expanded five others.

Under Seattle's capital program, eight projects have been completed, including the new central library.

If King County's bond proposal passes, the Seattle-King County area can expect to see at least 62 library projects over the next decade.

Here's a partial list of what's on tap:
