Lynnwood High School in Bothell received the Council of Educational Facility Planners International's James D. MacConnell Award.

“It isn't a beauty contest. It's an award about how well does the building function as a school and how well does it meet the educational goals we had for it,” said Edward J. Peters, capital projects director with the Edmonds School District.

The school opened in the fall of 2009 at 18218 North Road and cost $73 million to build.

Bassetti Architects designed the 219,800-square-foot complex to enhance school unity and the surrounding ecosystem. The school's center is the Agora (Greek for marketplace), a gathering space and community resource that handles the flow of 1,600 students.

The school received a $240,000 energy rebate from the Snohomish County Public Utility District and earned an Energy Star design certification.

The district said staff, students, parents and the community are involved in planning and design of school facilities. The district submitted a video about Lynnwood High in connection with the award. View it at youtube.com/watch?v=WXriAhgjz1c.
