Design Perspectives: Designers want to weave waterfront into downtown

James Corner sees the waterfront as a place where natural and cultural environments meet. As the design lead for Seattle's post-viaduct waterfront, he is trying to make them all fit together.

In the process, he and his team are grappling with some competing and even conflicting elements. We've got flat topography and steep escarpments. Views are partially blocked by cherished finger piers. There are several upland neighborhoods and districts, from the sports stadiums to Belltown, that have good reasons to claim their own piece of the waterfront.
