Bertha repair will take about a year

The machine digging the tunnel for the Alaskan Way viaduct replacement won’t start moving again until next March and that means the tunnel won’t open until November of 2016.

The project’s design-build contractor, Seattle Tunnel Partners, said repairs to the stuck machine Bertha will begin in late May with construction of the underground walls for a repair pit. Excavation of the pit will go from July through September.
