Notre Dame not insured; French government will pay billions to rebuild it after the fire

    Renovation work was underway when the blaze broke out. If the contractor caused the fire, its insurance wouldn’t come close to paying the cost to restore the cathedral.

    LONDON — Rebuilding Notre Dame, the 800-year-old Paris cathedral devastated by fire last week, will cost billions of dollars as architects, historians and artisans work to preserve the medieval landmark.
