ROCHESTER, Thurston County — Talking Cedar, a Washington brewery, distillery, restaurant, tap-room and tasting room at 19770 Sargent Road S.W. in Rochester, is making history.
In March, the facility became the first tribal-owned distillery in the U.S. to begin producing spirits. Talking Cedar opened in 2020. At that time, it was the first tribal owned distillery to exist in the U.S. and the first distillery allowed in Indian country since 1834. This was made possible thanks to the repeal of an Andrew Jackson-era statute that prohibited such operations on Indian lands.
