Sound Transit on Thursday night was to have unveiled preliminary designs for the $62 million Tacoma Trestle track and signal project. The improvements to two-thirds of a mile of track are expected to increase rail capacity for additional Sounder and Amtrak trains.
The single-track wooden railroad trestle east of Freighthouse Square will be replaced with a concrete double-track structure, and a steel girder overpass with pedestrian walkway will be installed over East G Street.
An extended platform at East G will accommodate Amtrak Coast Starlight passenger trains and have space for baggage cart movement. A walled stairway will serve as an emergency exit.
Other work will include signal upgrades, new retaining walls, street repairs and utility relocation.
The project is about 30 percent designed, with final designs expected in summer 2015. Construction would follow and the new section would open in late 2017
Portland-based David Evans and Associates has been working with Sound Transit on the project.
