Bertha hits the pit; repair will ‘take as long as it's going to take'

Chris Dixon of Seattle Tunnel Partners said repairing Bertha is a dynamic process that requires a series of steps — and this giant gantry crane.

The tunnel boring machine Bertha has chewed through 20 feet of unreinforced concrete to reach the 120-foot-deep pit where it will be disassembled for repairs.
