Another ‘hinge' for new floating bridge

Yesterday crews from Kiewit/General/Manson started installing the second of four hinges that will link floating sections of the new SR 520 bridge with stationary segments at the opposite sites of Lake Washington.

Last summer, crews installed the five-girder first hinge near the eastern shore of the lake. The second hinge is also being installed on the east side.

The second hinge will consist of eight 45-ton girders, each 190 feet long. This hinge is wider than the first because it will support a bike/pedestrian path in addition to vehicle lanes.

A news release from Washington State Department of Transportation said crews should have the second transition span in place by Thursday.

Similar spans will be installed at the west end of the bridge prior to its opening in the spring of 2016.

They can move about 6 feet to compensate for changing lake levels.

The final three of 77 pontoons that will make up the bridge's floating part arrived on the lake earlier this month. Crews have joined and anchored 54 pontoons so far.

Flatiron West is continuing work in Seattle on the West Approach Bridge North project.
