Volunteer Park stage may get upgrade

Two groups are seeking a team to do a feasibility study and design program for redeveloping the outdoor performance space at Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill.

The program will guide future architectural design, according to Volunteer Park Trust and Performance Space Task Force.

Qualifications are due June 15, according to a notice in the May 13 DJC. The budget is $20,000 for this phase, with funding from a city of Seattle grant.

A pre-bid site visit is set for 9 a.m. June 2 in the park, which is at 1247 15th Ave. E.

Information from the trust said the 48.3-acre park is the most complete and well‐preserved example of the Olmsted Brothers' landscape design for Seattle parks.

In 1915, the city built a wooden band shell designed by prominent local architects Bebb & Gould at the site of the current stage.

The band shell was razed in 1947 and not replaced until 1971, when landscape architect Richard Haag designed the brick bandstand that is there today. The trust said the performance space lacks features needed for staging music, theater, dance, film, rallies and other gatherings. The feasibility study will evaluate whether the existing facility can be upgraded to meet current needs.

Citizens created the trust in 2012 to protect and preserve the park.
