Seattle Central College plans to construct a new academic building on its 2.2-acre Seattle Maritime Academy campus in Ballard.

The site is at 4455 Shilshole Ave. N.W., just east of the Ballard Bridge.

Students at the maritime academy train for maritime careers, receiving instruction on topics such as navigation, fishing vessel licensing and deck-equipment maintenance.

The two-story, 24,000-square-foot building would have classrooms, vocational labs, a library, offices, tool storage, kitchen and lounge areas, and gathering space. An electrical shed will be demolished.

Site improvements include new lighting, utilities, landscape and irrigation, and bicycle enclosures.

The estimated construction cost is $10.5 million to $11 million. Bids are due by 3 p.m. June 9 to the state Department of Enterprise Services. See the public notice in the May 6 DJC for more details.

Schreiber Starling & Lane Architects is the designer. The project will seek a LEED silver rating.

Other team members include Reid Middleton, civil engineer; HBB Landscape Architecture, landscape architect; PCS Structural Solutions, structural engineer; Rushing Co., mechanical engineer; Wood Harbinger, electrical engineer; and PBS Engineering & Environmental, environmental engineer.
