Dump truck plunges off I-5

BELLINGHAM (AP) — A dump truck plunged 25 feet down an Interstate 5 embankment and caught fire, but no one was seriously hurt.

The Bellingham Herald reports (http://is.gd/PPWQAp ) that witnesses said the truck teetered for a few moments before falling to a driveway off Iowa Street at about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday. It took the 23-year-old-driver, Mitchell Winterburn, about 30 seconds to force his way out of the mangled cab, and the truck started flaming about two minutes later.

Winterburn was checked by medics and did not need to go to the hospital.

The truck was owned by Rome Construction. It was not immediately clear why the truck went off the freeway.

Responders shut down Iowa and Lincoln streets near the freeway for the firefighting and investigation efforts.
