Tuesday's storm swelled the creek under a bridge on US 2 east of Skykomish, causing significant erosion under the foundation.
“The creek washed away a large amount of material that supports the eastern half of this bridge,” said WSDOT Assistant Regional Administrator Dave McCormick in a news release. “To keep drivers safe, we have closed the bridge to all but emergency vehicles. Our engineers are currently working on an emergency contract to reopen the bridge to traffic.”
US 2 is closed between Skykomish and the summit at Stevens Pass. WSDOT doesn't know when the section will reopen and there is no detour.
WSDOT is seeking emergency relief funds from the Federal Highway Administration for repairs.
The bridge was last inspected on Aug. 19.
