Seattle Tunnel Partners yesterday installed five of the 10 concrete girders that will support the final section of the north operations building for the waterfront tunnel.
WSDOT expects the installation job will be finished today.
Each 35-ton girder is 70 feet long and spans the pit where the tunnel boring machine named Bertha was removed last summer. They will form the foundation for the operations building.
At last check, the tunnel was expected to open in early 2019. After that, WSDOT will begin demolishing the aging Alaskan Way Viaduct that the tunnel replaces.
