OLYMPIA — It's probably not a good idea to build a school or a big subdivision next door to an army training ground. But there are less obvious ways civilian developments can interfere with military operations and vice versa.

That's why the Washington State Department of Commerce is drafting a guidebook on military and community compatibility. The guidebook will offer technical guidance to planning professionals, and offer useful tools to help community members, local governments and the military work together on local planning.
