SEATTLE — Crews assigned the Herculean task of demolishing the viaduct are now facing another big chore: dealing with snow.
WSDOT opened the waterfront tunnel last week to replace the viaduct and crews with Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. quickly mobilized their gear below the Columbia Street on-ramp, one of the first pieces of the viaduct system set for removal.
Then the snowstorms arrived.
A couple of weeks ago, WSDOT spokeswoman Laura Newborn wrote that demolition was scheduled to begin today. Now Newborn says the snowstorms have slightly delayed the job, with Kiewit looking at starting later this week — weather permitting.
California-based Ferma is Kiewit's primary demolition subcontractor.
