Sound Transit's $2.9 billion Lynnwood Link Extension project is eating up quite a few trees — about 5,400 — to clear its 8.5-mile path from Northgate to Lynnwood.
About 75% of the trees are along Interstate 5 in the right of way owned by WSDOT, and Sound Transit is planning to replace uprooted vegetation with over 20,000 new trees. There is a slight rub: the city of Shoreline requires landscape buffers between the light rail corridor and residential neighborhoods, but in some locations there isn't enough space on public property to plant these buffers.
