Letter to the Editor: Broken buildings? Try broken lawyers

In response to your story on Barry LePatner's book “Broken Buildings, Busted Budgets: How to fix America's Trillion-Dollar Construction Industry” (DJC Nov. 8), I think the construction industry needs to write a book in response to his shotgun claims. It should be titled: “Broken Lawyers, Busted Budgets: How to fix America's MULTI-Trillion-Dollar Fleecing of the Construction Industry.”

His comment about FedEx is a flat out lie. FedEx does not always get your package there by the next day or on time. As a lawyer, Mr. LePatner needs to read FedEx's fine print which says that they are not responsible for weather delays. We had a bid for a WSDOT project that we paid FedEx to be delivered by 10 a.m. for an 11 a.m. bid opening, but they delayed delivering the package until all their planes came in from other airports that were delayed by fog. When I called FedEx to ask why, they said they are not responsible for weather delays.

I'm sure the contractors that read the DJC could easily fill a book with broken lawyer stories.
