Energy aid program now offers cooling

WASHINGTON — After 40 years of helping low-income households with heating expenses, the Washington State Department of Commerce recently modified the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to cover cooling and air conditioning.

This is seen as a necessary and potentially lifesaving step following June's heat dome, the deadliest weather event in the state's history. Until now, the LIHEAP only covered assistance for heating. Households can now also get help with cooling and air-conditioning, as well as air purifiers during wildfire emergencies.
