Crabbing season off to a good start

SEATTLE — As first reported in The Seattle Times, this year's crabbing season (which began earlier than usual on Dec. 1) is off to a stellar start.

So far, more than 4.69 million pounds of Dungeness crab have been harvested. The season began 30 days earlier than the past six years due to an increase in the size and quality of crabs. This increase is the result of improved ocean conditions along the Northwest coasts where strong cold-water upwellings have strengthened the base of the marine food web.
