SEATTLE — On Aug. 11, 1973, DJ Kool Herc and his sister Cindy threw a back-to-school jam at 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in the Bronx. This party, held in the rec room of the apartment building, is widely considered to be the birthplace of hip-hop.
Now, 50 years later, KEXP will release a new podcast to celebrate this milestone. “50 Years of Hip-Hop” will include personal reflections, as well as iconic tracks and albums. Each episode will feature a highlight from a different year, featuring the voices of KEXP's editorial team and DJs and will be hosted by Larry Mizell, Jr.
