SAN DIEGO - Cummins Engine Co. unveiled at the Associated Equipment Distributors Convention the new B3.3 engine for mobile industrial applications a result of the agreement announced in May, 1998 between Cummins and Kimatsu LTD of Japan.
Under the agreement, Cummins and Kimatsu's joint venture company, KCEC of Oyama, Japan, will produce the 3.3-liter engine for use by both companies.
The engine is a four-cylinder, naturally aspirated and turbocharged diesel with ratings from 60 to 85 horsepower (45-65 kW) and emissions compliant to the Environmental Protection Agency/European Tier 1, CARB and is capable of meeting future EPA/European Tier 2 standards.

"The addition of this engine aligns with our business strategy of targeting growth opportunities in new markets. The 3.3 liter will be a high-quality and competitively priced product that can be tailored to match our customers' business needs," Kelly said. "We have enjoyed increasing success in the industrial markets during the past five years and, with an industrial engine product range of 60 to 2700 horsepower, we anticipate continued growth in the future."
Targeted applications for the new engine include air compressors, excavators, loaders, compactors, skidsteer loaders, forklifts, pumps, welders and other construction and agricultural equipment.
Production of the B3.3 will begin in June.
A liquid-cooled, in-line, four-cylinder engine, the B3.3's bore and stroke is 95 mm x 115 mm, for an overall displacement of 3.3 liters (199 cu. in.). With dry weights ranging from 520 to 553 lb. (236-251 kg), it offers weight savings of nearly 200 lbs. over the smallest B Series engine. Torque is in the 158 to 215 lb.-ft. range (214 to 291 N.m.).
The Cummins B3.3 offers a simple, compact, robust design for reliability, durability and ease of maintenance and repair. Its features include a parent bore block, and direct injection for better fuel consumption, low heat rejection and quick starting capability. In addition, it offers a deep, stiffened crankcase with optimized rib arrangement for lower noise. Also, it has a strong torque rise: 20 percent for naturally aspirated models and 25 percent for turbocharged models.
Cummins offers a global service/support network and the Cummins standard industry warranty of 2,000 hours/two years further enhances the brand strength of the OEM's equipment. Among the installation options available for the B3.3 are:
- Multiple fan height and ratio choices
- SAE "A" PTO options
- Intake air heater and cold-start aids
- One-side service capability option
- Increased noise treatment
