Letter to the Editor -- Fisken defends votes on SSA and port levy

I appreciate the Journal's consistent and informed coverage of the Port of Seattle. Hopefully that coverage will continue and grow. I did want to clarify a point that was raised in the commission meeting of Dec. 14, when Commissioner Davis suggested my vote supporting the $60-plus million in work for the SSA terminals was inconsistent with my objections to the port's property tax (DJC, Dec. 15).

Of the total, the $39 million for Terminal 18 had been agreed to by the commission, for whatever reason, last year. There did not appear to be any legally secure way to reverse that decision. The smaller amount was for reopening Terminal 25 as a container terminal. That's a project I very much support, particularly after listening to the litany of complaints about volume-challenged Terminal 18 this fall. Reopening 25 is an important step toward solving those problems.
