Seattle-based Strata Architects promoted Erin Kelly to associate. Kelly was hired two years ago and has 15 years of experience in the commercial and residential sectors. He has led mixed-use projects in the Puget Sound region. He is working on an adaptive reuse project in South Seattle, a restaurant in Eastlake and a multifamily project near the upcoming light rail station in Shoreline.
Seattle-based F5 Networks appointed Mika Yamamoto as executive vice president and chief marketing and customer experience officer, a newly created position, and Geng Lin as chief technology officer. Yamamoto was global president of Marketo, a marketing automation software company now owned by Adobe. Lin was managing director, chief development officer and head of engineering for consumer and community banking at J.P. Morgan Chase.
The U.S. Small Business Administration named Ross Black, owner and CEO of Simple Box Storage, as 2019 Washington Small Business Person of the Year. Black founded Simple Box when he was a high school senior in 1997. The company rents and sells shipping containers for storage, moving or modification. It employs 26 people at eight locations in Washington, Idaho and Oregon.
In Seattle, Adaptive Biotechnologies hired Francis Lo as chief people officer. Lo was vice president of human resources at Whole Foods Market, where he helped integrate personnel after the grocer was bought by Amazon. Before that, he held leadership roles in sales, operations and human resources at Frito Lay, PepsiCo and Starbucks. Adaptive Biotechnologies focuses on immune-driven medicine.
Seattle-based Brooks Running opened a 400,000-square-foot distribution center in Whitestown, Indiana, that serves as its North American distribution center. It is expected to employ more than 130 people by 2023. Brooks' previous North American distribution center was in Sumner. The company said the new center will cut carbon emissions in half because it's closer to more customers and the building is more energy efficient.
Seattle-based architecture firm Weinstein A+U named Kirsten Wild, Davi Parker-Garcia, Rob Kiker and Matthew Zinski principals and promoted Emma Nowinski and Lauren Rock to associate, Tania van Heerden to BIM manager and Stephanie Hsie to marketing manager.
Wild has over 20 years of experience and a record of successful civic projects and LEED certification. She recently completed Seattle Fire Station 22 and is working on the Blackbird multifamily project in Redmond, and University Temple United Methodist Church planning. Parker-Garcia has over 15 years of experience on projects that include multifamily, nonprofit, adaptive reuse and a city hall. She most recently worked on Canton Lofts, a mixed-used housing development in Pioneer Square. Kiker has over 20 years of experience working with multifamily, institutional and commercial clients. His mid-rise residential work includes Station House in Redmond, and he is working on a mixed-use multifamily project at 110 First Ave. W. in Seattle. Zinski has over 10 years of experience, particularly on educational, civic, cultural and multifamily projects. He recently completed Vida Apartments in the Roosevelt District and is working on Jazz House, a joint venture between the nonprofit groups JazzED and Capitol Hill Housing.
Nowinski is an architect with over 10 years of experience in civic, corporate, university and residential projects. She is project manager for Tukwila fire stations 51 and 52. Rock has eight years of experience on projects, including tenant improvements and interiors, public projects and adaptive re-use. She recently completed Seattle Fire Station 22 and is the project architect for Tukwila fire stations 51 and 52.
Van Heerden has over 20 years of experience as a designer and BIM manager. Her experience includes multifamily and mixed-use, high-rise, commercial, education and public projects in South Africa, Australia and the U.S. She did construction contract administration for the State Hotel in downtown Seattle.
Hsie has over 10 years of experience on projects, including higher education, commercial, performing arts and urban planning. She works with principals to plan and implement business development opportunities and bring a greater awareness to the firm culture and design expertise. Most recently, she has been assisting Northwest Center on programming and site selection.
In Seattle, Hart Crowser hired Vaishnavi Komaravolu as an environmental engineer, Chris Orr as a geologist, Rebecca Leporati as a learning and development specialist and Becca Dozier as a hydrogeologist. In Portland, it hired Tony Bardana as a corporate business development lead and Tess Lydick as a staff geologist.
Komaravolu will support environmental cleanup projects. The licensed engineer in training is experienced with habitat restoration projects involving cleanup of hydrocarbon-contaminated sites. She has a bachelor's in chemical engineering from B.M.S. College of Engineering in Bangalore, India, and a master's in environmental engineering from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Orr has a bachelor's in geology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and was awarded the Bronze Star in the U.S. Army for excellence in leadership during combat operations in Afghanistan. He will support geotechnical projects such as deep excavations for high-rise buildings. Leporati is in a new human resources department position designed to better meet the needs of employees as they pursue career goals. She will develop and coordinate training, lead new employee onboarding, manage employee development programs, and support development of internal information resources. She has a master's in library and information science from the University of Washington and was a project assistant at Hart Crowser. Dozier has experience with the transport of contaminants in groundwater and soil, and will assist with environmental and hydrogeologic investigations. She has a bachelor's in geology and environmental studies from Guildford College in North Carolina and a master's in hydrogeology from Clemson University in South Carolina.
Bardana has experience in management, marketing and business development strategy. He will develop and implement marketing-related programs geared toward the firm's stability, growth and long-term success, and will coach and do staff training. He has 26 years of professional experience. Lydick has a bachelor's in environmental geology from the University of Kansas. She will work on environmental site assessment and cleanup, including contaminated waterfront sites and wetlands projects. Hart Crowser is an engineering, science and consulting firm headquartered in Seattle.

On Friday, Jerry Chase will become CEO of Auburn-based Orion Industries. Chase was president and CEO of Bsquare, a provider of internet of things software products and solutions. Before that, he was CEO at Lantronix and Terayon. He replaces John Theisen, who is retiring after 18 years. Orion is an aerospace manufacturer and contact center that teaches job skills to people who face employment barriers.
DarkLight added Jason Upton as chief product officer, David Aucsmith as chief scientist and Lynda Gaughan as CFO; and moved Shawn Riley to chief visionary officer. Upton spent over 20 years as a senior executive at Microsoft. Aucsmith is a former Navy officer who has written on cybercrime, cyber espionage and cyber warfare. He also held senior security roles with Intel and Microsoft. Gaughan was a start-up executive in the Seattle area. Riley is a member of the Forbes Technology Council. Bellevue-based DarkLight develops cybersecurity solutions using artificial intelligence.
The U.S. Department of Energy named Mark French as Federal Project Director of the Year for 2018. French is director of the projects and facilities division at Energy's Richland Operations Office. He was honored for his role in the cleanup of the Columbia River Corridor. This is the first time that the award has gone to a project director at Hanford.
In its Seattle office, JTM Construction added Jeff Griffin as laborer superintendent, Henry Corrado as project engineer intern, Drew Ralston as project engineer, Justin Egge as project manager, Jacob Pearce as assistant survey superintendent, Lucas Giess as laborer foreman and Martin Sanchez as superintendent.
Burlington-based Trico Companies hired Jesse Ellenz as project manager. Ellenz has over 15 years of design-build contracting experience and has worked on projects throughout the U.S. and overseas. He holds a bachelor's in construction management from Central Washington University.
