The University of Washington recently finished construction of Alder Hall, a 195,000-square-foot residence hall at its Seattle Campus.

Along with 603 student beds, the building houses the District Market grocery store and the Husky Grind cafe.

It also has Alder Commons, with 60,000 square feet for events and programs. There are four meeting rooms and a 222-seat auditorium for departmental meetings, banquets, lectures, events and conferences.

Alder Hall joins Poplar Hall, a 97,000-square-foot building that was finished last year on an adjacent site. Poplar houses 278 students and has a common kitchen and central lounge, TV and study areas, laundry facilities and storage rooms.

Both buildings were designed by Mahlum and built by Walsh Construction Co.

Poplar is set to receive LEED gold, and Alder is under review for LEED gold.

Both use heat recovery central HVAC systems and high-efficiency water technology. Low-VOC products were used and more than 95 percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills, including demolition debris.

Other team members were SVR Design Co., civil engineer; Coughlin Porter Lundeen, structural engineer; PAE Consulting Engineers, mechanical and electrical engineer; RDH Group, envelope consultant; and Gustafson Guthrie Nichol, landscape architect.
