Seattle to open 100-bed shelter

SEATTLE — Mayor Ed Murray said the city will partner with the Downtown Emergency Service Center to fund a new 100-bed shelter in a city-owned property, expected to open late this summer.

The city has allocated $350,000 to fund the project.

The mayor also released a report by the city's Human Services Department on efforts to prevent homelessness, with recommendations to make the services more effective.

According to the report, the city spends $40 million a year on homeless services.

Murray said in a statement that the number of people lacking access to housing is “unacceptably high” and that the analysis will help the city deploy its investments more effectively.
