New Seasons grocery coming here

A Portland-based natural grocery chain called New Seasons Market said it will open its first store in the Seattle area next year.

The store will be at 2755 77th Ave. S.E. on Mercer Island in a building that was home to Albertsons until it closed this month.

New Seasons plans to hire Portland-based LRS Architects to design the store. No general contractor has been selected.

Dina Keenan, chief marketing officer at New Seasons, said the company chose Mercer Island because it is a tight community that values sustainability. Keenan said New Seasons will hold a community event this summer to get to know Mercer Island residents.

New Seasons CEO Wendy Collie spent more than two decades in Seattle, including time on Mercer Island, and was an executive at Starbucks.

New Seasons has 15 stores in the Portland-Vancouver area and recently opened one in San Jose, California.

The company generally opens one or two stores every year, Keenan said. She would not say if it has immediate plans for a second store in this area.

The New Seasons Market shown here is in the southeast Portland neighborhood of Hawthorne.
