Emerald Communities has broken ground on the first phase of Heron's Key continuing care retirement community on Borgen Boulevard near Peacock Hill Avenue Northwest in Gig Harbor.
Rice Fergus Miller of Bremerton is the architect for the two-phase project, which will be on a 17.7-acre site.
The approximately 425,000-square-foot first phase is expected to be complete in 18 to 20 months.
It will have 184 independent living apartments and 10 independent living cottages. There will also be 45 private skilled nursing beds and 36 assisted living apartments in a health center.
A construction date hasn't been set for the second phase, which will have 78 independent living apartments, 32 memory care apartments, and 10 independent living cottages.
The architect said in a press release that the outdoor spaces will be connected by walkways to promote an active pedestrian campus connected to the greater community park and trail system.
The development will also have energy- and water-saving elements.
Lisa Hardy, president and CEO of Emerald Communities, said the project's location is ideal as it is near health care providers, stores and restaurants and is walkable.
The project team for the first phase also includes, LCS Development, for-fee developer; The Weitz Co., contractor; Coughlin Porter Lundeen, structural engineer; David Evans and Associates, civil engineer; Berger Partnership, landscape architect; and studiosix5, interior designer.
Redmond-based Emerald Communities is a non-profit senior housing and service organization. Besides Heron's Key, it owns a continuing care retirement community in Redmond called Emerald Heights.
