74 units planned for site on Aurora

The Stratford Co. wants to build a 74-unit apartment project one block east of a busy stretch of Aurora Avenue North in Seattle's Licton Springs neighborhood.

The four-story complex would be constructed on a 15,400-square-foot vacant lot at 1141 N. 88th St., and face Nesbit Avenue North.

About half of the apartments would be micro-units. The rest would have open one-bedroom layouts.

Rutledge Maul Architects is designing the project. Other team members are Pacific Engineering Design and Glenn Takagi, Landscape Architect.

The city will hold a design recommendation meeting at 8 p.m. today at Ballard Community Center, at 6020 28th Ave. N.W. Another recommendation meeting was held in June.

Surrounding blocks to the north and east are residential areas, filled mainly with townhouses. Architects say in the design packet filed with the city that these apartments would help wall off Aurora and make the neighborhood more walkable.

Sidewalk improvements include a paved area with street furniture on the northwest corner designed to provide open space and encourage people to interact. No parking is planned.

The building would be designed around a central courtyard and an exterior walkway connecting the north and south sides. Two residential entries are planned along Nesbit.

The basement level would house bike storage, a media room, fitness room and a lounge with a bar. A roof deck is also planned.

Architects say the units are intended for students, recent graduates, young professionals and seniors. A Metro RapidRide stop is a few blocks away at Aurora and North 85th Street.

The project will seek four-star Built Green certification.
