Seattle team starts new apartments in Bellingham

Laird Norton Properties and Spectrum Development Solutions have broken ground on Stateside, a 164-unit apartment building at 903-929 N. State St. in Bellingham. The apartments will be aimed at university students at nearby Western Washington University. Mithun designed the two-building, six-story complex, which is expected to achieve LEED Silver and Fitwel certification. Exxel Pacific, which is based in Bellingham, is the general contractor. The team also includes Herrera, civil engineer; KPFF, structural engineer; Express Electric and Emerald City Engineering, electrical engineers; Wolf, plumbing engineer; and Emerald Aire, mechanical engineer. Completion is expected by the fall of 2021, before classes begin. Stateside will have 100 parking stalls and 392 bike stalls; the site is just east of the popular South Bay Trail, and a short walk uphill to the WWU campus. Murals on the old buildings to be removed, by Seattle artist and WWU grad Yale Wolf, will be preserved and reinstalled along the trail; and he's been commissioned to create a new mural for Stateside.
