Landmarks board takes first step to protect Showbox

The City Council is scheduled to vote today on whether to expand the Pike Place Market Historical District another six months to include the Showbox.

Last summer, as the DJC first reported, potential buyer Onni Group filed a plan for a for a 44-story, 442-unit residential tower on the site (plus a neighboring and separately owned parking lot to the north). Later that summer, the Seattle City Council voted to temporarily expand the boundaries of the Pike Place Market Historical District to preserve the nearly 80-year-old venue. That protection is due to expire this month.
