County delays property taxes

SEATTLE — King County announced on Monday that property tax payments, usually due April 30 for the first portion of one's annual assessment, are now due June 1.

County Executive Dow Constantine made the executive order, and said in a statement, “My order provides short-term relief for individual taxpayers who own residential or commercial property, while allowing the state, county, cities and special purpose districts to continue meeting community needs as we all pull together to get through this unprecedented crisis.”

The order does not apply to banks and other financial institutions that pay property taxes on behalf of their lending customers; for them, the original April 30 deadline still applies.

The April 30 deadline is still encouraged, but no interest will be charged for those paying by June 1.
