Description
A seismic retrofit of the historic 318,000-square-foot university library that faces Red Square. The project seismically ties in the original 1925 library with additions built in 1935, 1947 and 1963 — which would move differently during a major earthquake, possibly resulting in extensive damage. Structural frames of the additions are being tied together with steel beams and new shearwalls are being poured. Work includes demolishing slab sections and building corners for shearwall, structural bracing and seismic floor knitting. Other work includes mechanical and electrical upgrades to the sections built in 1925 and 1935, and reinforcing masonry walls to keep stones from falling off during an earthquake. The Allen addition to the library, built in the early 1990s, is not part of the project.
