Description
White Hall, an existing 57,700 square-foot classroom building constructed in 1928 for the Washington State University Home Economics department, is being renovated as a home for the university’s Honors College, an Honors residence hall and an open access computer lab.

The Honors college will occupy 11,700 square feet on the first floor. The Honors Residence Hall — including residential suites, recreational and housekeeping areas, and storage areas — will occupy approximately 41,000 square feet using part of the basement floor and all of the second, third and fourth floors. The computer lab will occupy 2,700 square feet in the basement and will be accessible from a new exterior entrance. Mechanical and utility rooms make up the balance of the building.

Included in the Honors College are two state-of-the-art seminar rooms, a library/reading room, gallery lounge, multipurpose lounge and administrative/faculty offices.

The residence hall will house 118 students. The design scheme is for residential suites of three to four dorm rooms with a common living space, kitchenette and bathrooms. Each floor will have a major common lounge area and group study room. The residents’ common lounge will be located on the fourth floor with an existing fireplace and generous territorial views to the west. The residence hall common area in the basement will contain a community kitchen, exercise room, laundry, music practice rooms, game room and TV room.

The mission of the renovation is to provide the Honors College with an identity that symbolizes the value the university places on academic achievement by providing a living and learning program in one complex, thereby stimulating artistic and scholarly expression.
