#6. McNeil Island Special Commitment Center |
(construction cost $44.8 million) Project address: |
The project also includes an expansion of the current steam boiler and electrical plant, and a remodel of several existing support facilities for administration, food service/dining, recreation and the commissary. A total of three new buildings will be constructed totaling 125,000 square feet. Another two buildings will be remodeled. Additional work includes extensive site preparation and primary utility installations, demolition, security fencing & perimeter electronic surveillance, and paving/landscaping. The project has extremely difficult site logistics because of its island location. Ferries and barges are being used to transport personnel, materials and equipment. Because McNeil Island is essentially an island wildlife refuge that hosts corrections facilities on some portions, measures are being taken to prevent sediment run-off and contamination of any of the sensitive shoreline and wetlands areas during construction.
