Original contract amount: $22.63 million

Project address:
State Route 18, Covington to Maple Valley

Start of construction: April 27, 2001

Expected completion date:
Dec. 11, 2002

Owner:
Washington State Department of Transportation

Description
The high number of head-on collisions on the two-lane state Route 18 led to the present efforts to make safety and capacity improvements on this stretch of highway.

The upgrades between 180th Avenue Southeast and Maple Valley are part of a larger project, ongoing since 1991, to widen Route 18 and make safety improvements in the corridor from Auburn to Interstate 90.

Approximately four miles of highway will be widened to four lanes with a 48-foot grass median. Scarsella Brothers Inc. is constructing a new interchange at Southeast 256th Street and a new undercrossing at Southeast 240th Street, and will build seven new bridges.

Extensive stream and wetland mitigation is under way to minimize the environmental impact.
