#5. Intermodal access, Phase 1 -- South Atlantic Street

Original contract amount: $32.89 million

Project address:
Fourth Avenue South and South Atlantic Street, Seattle

Start of construction:
May 2001

Expected completion date:
February 2004

Owner:
Washington State Department of Transportation

Description
One of Seattle’s most congested areas is in the vicinity of South Atlantic Street, where southbound traffic from the Colman Ferry Terminal competes with traffic from I-90 and I-5.

These already heavily traveled arterials must also accommodate railroad traffic, and when the new stadium is complete, pressure on this area will be even greater.

This intermodal access project will improve connections between the ferry terminal and the two interstates, improve access to the two stadiums, and eliminate the conflicts between automobile and railroad traffic.

In Phase One of the project, Balfour Beatty is constructing an eastbound ramp connecting South Atlantic Street to I-90, with an elevated intersection at Fourth Avenue South and South Atlantic Street that will pass over the railroad crossing.
