#2. New Mount Tahoma High, Phase II | ||
Project address: |
Currently, Mount Tahoma is a traditional large high school, with large classes and outmoded facilities. A new type of school is envisioned that will ensure smaller class sizes and an interdisciplinary curriculum that divides the school into several smaller learning communities, with smaller classes, and greater interaction between teachers, students and mentors. Students will be divided into groups of 100 per “team” or grade. This “school within a school” approach is accommodated by the design, but the design is flexible and will accommodate future curriculum changes. The design will also maximize community use and access. A healthy school environment will be promoted by an abundance of natural light and natural ventilation. A central social area, the heart of the school, will offer a clear view of Mount Rainier. Once finished, the school’s 270,00 square feet will accommodate 1,800 students. In addition, a stadium complex for 3,200 spectators, gymnasium with 1,800 bleacher seats, athletic fields and 25-yard competition swimming pool facility will be built.
Up-to-date library and media facilities, as well as a performing arts auditorium will be available to the students.
