Description
The new Mason Middle School is replacing and being constructed on the same site as the old Mason Middle School, which was built in 1926.

Demolition of the original school was included in this project, as well as all site work.

The Tacoma School District has set aside architectural artifacts from the old school to incorporate into the new facilities. Rescued pieces include plaster ornaments; Douglas fir wood trim; brass light fixtures; wood columns, doors and window frames; and metal lockers.

Many of the artifacts require restoration to repair chips and replace lead-based paint to make them suitable for the new environment.

Construction for the approximately 130,000-square-foot middle school generally involves concrete slab-on-grade, tilt-up concrete walls, CMU walls, rigid steel framing and steel stud partitioning.

The exterior walls are brick veneer. The roof will have bitumen roofing over rigid insulation.

Mechanically, the building will have both variable-volume and constant-volume air systems. A central gas-fired boiler system and a chilled water system will regulate heating and cooling.
