#5. FY02 whole barracks renewal, Fort Lewis | |
Project address: |
The barracks addition will house 300 soldiers in a three-story building. The barracks will have an adjacent, single-story community building for residents. The two spaces have approximately 120,556 square feet combined. The barracks and associated buildings follow the low-rise, strong horizontal composition of the existing buildings on Echo Block. The design intends to make the new construction consistent with the park-like military setting, which the army is cultivating for Echo Block. Additional facilities include three company buildings. Two medium duplexes standing two stories are under construction with 16,684 square feet each. The third company building is a large duplex with 20,182 square feet. An additional headquarter building will be built, including a two-story, 14,262-square-foot battalion headquarters. The new buildings feature structural steel frames, brick primary exterior wall cladding, concrete tiles, and aluminum and vinyl window systems. The Seattle District of the Army Corps of Engineers designed barracks for the FY02 project, while WJA designed the accompanying battalion and company headquarters.
Currently, 1,400 housing units stand on North Fort. The master plan calls for 3,000 more housing units with associated administration, supply and recreation facilities to improve life for soldiers living on base.
